Follow Jesus in His Steps (10):

The Parables Said by Jesus (3) - The Parable of the Talents

Scriptures: Matthew 25:14-29, 1Peter 4:7-10

Memory Verses: But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for Òlove will cover a multitude of sins.Ó  Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1Peter 4:7-10)

(A)  The LordÕs commissions may vary, but every one has one and will settle the account with the Lord sooner or later

1)  The Lord gives talents according to individualÕs ability (compared with Luke 19:11-17 the parable where every servant receives one mina)

2) One day, the Lord will settle the accounts with us ( Matthew 25:19)

(B) Men often respond differently to the LordÕs commissions

-  The greatest difference is not in the gifts or responsibilities, but the attitudes and efforts

- ÒImmediately went to tradeÓ  vs. ÒDug in the groundÉhid his talentÓ

- ÒFaithfully managing and joyfully giving accountsÓ   vs. ÒPurposely being lazy,

unreasonable and irresponsibleÓ

(c) The extremes of two endings

1) Different evaluations from the master

   - To the faithful servant : ÒWell done, good and faithful servantÉÓ

               - To the wicked servant: Ò You the wicked and lazy servantÉÓ

2)  Completely different  results  ( 11 talents vs. nothing)

a) Everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away

-To  the faithful servant: ÒYou have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many thingsÓ

- To the wicked servant: Take the talent from him , and give it to him who has ten talentsÓ

b) ÒEntering into the joy of the masterÓ vs. ÒWeeping and gnashing of teeth in the darknessÓ

- To the faithful servant: ÒEnter into the joy of your lordÓ

- To the wicked servant: ÒCast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teethÓ
