Love unto all saints (II) — Wash one another’s feet

 07/26/09

Scriptures:  John 13:1-17,  Philippians 2:1-2

Memory verse:

“You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.   If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”   (John 13:14-15)

I.                 The impetus behind washing feet: A never ending love

-having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.”

II.                The meaning of washing feet

(1)   For cleansing: wash off all the worldly contaminations from the disciples

- He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean”

(2)   For fellowship: So that the disciples can partake in Lord’s victory and His heavenly life

-“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God”

- “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

(3)   As an example: to establish a model for the disciples to love and serve one another

-          “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”

III.             The blessing of washing one another’s feet

-“If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them”

v “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,  fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”   (Philippians 2:1-2)
