The Book of Samuel (10) – The Failure and Restoration of David

Memory Verse: “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”   (1 Cor 10:12-13)

Scriptures: 2 Samuel 11-12, Psalm 32, 51

I. The solemnity of temptations and the corruption of the flesh

II. David’s failures

v     “Loose”— Slept until sunset without being watchful

v     “Hard”— Disobedient, without immediate confession or repentance

v     “Wicked”— Attempted schemes to cover up the consequence of sin

v     “Proud”— Abused the kindly authority for evil

v     “False”— Disguising conversation with Joab

III. The dreadful consequences of David’s failures

v        David greatly sinned against God

v        A great occasion for the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme

v        David’s own family suffered great loss and hurt

v        The entire nation got into turmoil and unrest

IV. David’s repentance (Psalm 3251)

- “When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer.  I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,’ and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.”   (Psalm 32:3-5)

- “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions… 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts… 7 Purge me with hyssopWash me… 9 Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit… 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise. 18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem.”(Psalm 51)
