Samuel (7) - David’s suffering   3/15/09

Memory verse: Romans 8:16-18

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 18-27, Romans 8:16-18, 28-30, 2 Corinthian 4:17

I.                    The sufferings David experienced after being anointed

v     Wronged and envied, he became a fugitive (18-27)

v     Being far away from home, he became a homeless (19-20, 22)

v     Wandering in the wilderness, he suffered hunger and cold (21a)

v     Pretending to be mad, he endured a shameful survival (21b)

v     Betrayed by man, he fled from one place to another (23)

v     Humiliated and despised, he endured contempt of man (25)

II.                 God’s children suffer for “a positive purpose” and “a glorious end”

v     Romans 8:16-18 speaks of the positive sides of the suffering of saints

1.      The purpose: An essential experience for God’s children to mature in life

=> They will not only receive benefits but also become heirs of inheritance and commission

2.      The process: To suffer with the Lord ( to be conformed to the image of the Son of God => “To be like Him”)

3.      The end:  To be glorified with the Lord

v     For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory

III.               Suffering built up and raised up David

v     From complaint to praise

v     From fragility to maturity

v     From fear to trust

v     From smallness to broadness

v     From shame to glory
